ISCoS Textbook on Comprehensive management of Spinal Cord Injuries


ISCoS textbook has been compiled with  a view to provide a comprehensive guide containing information for all disciplines involved in SCI management (doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, vocational counselors, psychologists, assistive technologists, orthotists, and social worker) with additional information for doctors; it thus presents the holistic approach for SCI management by the whole team. It endeavours to ensure that the content provides a global scenario through inputs of a 23 member Editorial Committee & 184 contributing authors as well as co authors representing 25 different countries. The textbook also endeavors to cover developed, less and least developed scenarios through a global representation of contributors and editors; a separate chapter on “Challenges of Management in Less and Least Developed Countries” has been added to highlight the difficulties of the less resourced and the solutions to overcome them. We have ensured that the interests of consumers are taken into consideration through involvement of consumers in the Editorial Board in addition to having a separate chapter on the consumer perspective. The textbook covers the topic comprehensively; discusses various new topics which are not covered in the currently available textbooks including

The textbook has highly structured sections with all-inclusive information on the topic; has 82 chapters in the textbook grouped into 10 different sections. Various features have been introduced as under to ensure that book is reader friendly:

  • Simple and comprehensible presentation to facilitate easy assimilation of the knowledge by all disciplines.
  • Appropriate use of illustrations and figures.
  • All the chapters start with ‘Learning Objectives’ which are the outcome statements that describe the knowledge that readers should acquire after going through the chapter.
  • ‘Points to remember’ have been introduced to summarize the important facts and concepts contained in the section
  • ‘Key Points’ at the end of the chapter summarize the whole chapter. These features should help the reader with quick revision, and help those not interested in details to get the gist of the chapter at a glance.
